A Famine For Hearing The Word Of God
Amos 8:11-12 -“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God, “That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall wander from sea to sea, And from north to east; They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, But shall not find it.
Amos – was a shepherd and when he wasn’t shepherding he worked as a gatherer of fruit from the sycamore fig trees. God chose Amos to speak to Israel.
This scripture is speaking of a famine to hear the Word of God.
The people didn’t want to hear Gods Word, so God took it away.
Because Israel did not listen to the prophets there would come a time when they would want to hear from God when they were in trouble and God would not answer.
Notice they will run all over the place trying to find a Word from God.
Longing for God to say something that would give hope
Jesus said, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes for the mouth of God”. (Matt. 4:4)
Every time Paul was in a difficult situation, God spoke: (Acts 18, 22, 27)
We Need To Make An Effort To Hear God’s Word
Rom. 10:17 – Psalm 1:2-3 – Jeremiah 15:16
Hearing God’s Word Is Important – Important for Our Spiritual Growth
Exposure to the Word of God will change us, mold us, inspire us and bless us.
Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch (Acts 8:26-39) The Eunuch had position, power, possessions – but not satisfied. He made a great sacrifices. He traveled from Ethiopia to Jerusalem (over 1100 miles) Amos said “People would hunger for the Word that they would wander from sea to sea”. The Eunuch was returning home. Sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. He was hungry for God. He purchased this scroll…which was quite costly. God saw the hunger in his heart. The Word of God fills the void in all of us. It satisfies the deepest longings of our hearts. (Psalm. 107:9) The Eunuch’s heart was prepared to receive – he wanted to understand – he had an experience with God – He went away rejoicing. We need to be able to share God’s Word – Like Phillip
